SORA RENTAL NOTE · 38

What should I check when opening a Korean account for rent?

Prepare bank-specific identity and account-purpose documents, then check that the account can actually make your deposit and monthly rent payments.

Content checked · 3 October 2026

The key points

  • Ask the chosen bank which identity and purpose-of-account documents apply to you.
  • An open account can still have a transfer limit that is too low for your rental deposit.
  • Confirm the payment method and usable limits before the balance-payment date.

Ask the bank for the documents you need

The official legal-information guide for international students explains that banks verify identity and the purpose of financial transactions. Documents may include a passport or Residence Card and evidence of why the account is needed. The exact acceptable combination depends on the bank and your situation; neither 'passport alone always works' nor 'every bank always requires the same card' is a safe rule.

Tell the bank you are a foreign student and want to pay rent and a rental deposit. Ask what it accepts for your identity, address and account purpose before visiting. Have your lease available and ask whether school documents are useful; do not assume that bringing one document automatically guarantees account opening or unrestricted access.

Check these points together. The explanation below gives their relationship and conditions.

A bank may open an account with restricted transaction limits when the account-purpose evidence is insufficient for normal use. The Financial Services Commission explains that documentary requirements can differ between banks. Check the actual status of your account instead of assuming the standard limit described in a general article applies to you.

A balance of KRW 10 million does not necessarily mean you can transfer KRW 10 million through the app today. Ask about the limits for a single transfer, the day as a whole and the channel you will use. Ask what evidence or procedure is needed if the limit is too low, and when any approved change becomes usable.

Plan the lease payment before it is due

Well before the balance date, tell the bank the amount and intended payment day. Confirm a workable method with the landlord if bank processing will affect the plan. Do not assume a counter payment has no limit, or that several small transfers are an acceptable substitute for what the lease requires. Keep any agreed payment arrangement in writing.

For monthly rent, check the recipient account and the amount before sending. If you set up a scheduled transfer, verify that it is active, funded and timed for the agreed due date. Save the completed payment record with the lease. A setup screen or pending instruction is less useful than a record showing that the payment actually went through.

What to check

  1. Ask the bank which identity and account-purpose documents it accepts.
  2. Check whether the new account has restricted transaction limits.
  3. Confirm a workable deposit-payment method before the balance date.
  4. Keep completed rent-transfer records and review any scheduled payments.

Common questions

Does a lease automatically remove an account’s restrictions?

No. It may help explain the purpose, but the bank decides what evidence and checks it needs. Ask about the process and do not assume same-day approval.

My app works. Does that mean I can send the whole deposit?

No. Access, account balance and transfer limits are separate questions. Check the permitted amount for your account and payment channel before relying on it.
