Count the total, not just your US dollars

Check these points together. The explanation below gives their relationship and conditions.

Korean arrival rules require a declaration when covered cash and payment instruments exceed US$10,000 equivalent. Korean won and other currencies count together; the rule is not a separate allowance for each currency. This applies to arriving travellers regardless of nationality, so being an international student does not remove the requirement.

Before travelling, make a list of each currency, amount and any checks you intend to carry. Ask Korean Customs how an unfamiliar instrument should be treated. If the converted total is close to the threshold, confirm the calculation instead of relying on an old exchange rate or a rough estimate.

Deal with customs before meeting your landlord

Incheon Airport Customs directs travellers to declare the money, present it for inspection and collect the foreign-exchange declaration certificate. Its guidance says that the certificate cannot be issued after you have left the arrival area. Immigration passport control and customs are different steps.

Allow time between landing and the room handover. A pickup driver or landlord waiting outside should not make you rush past the declaration desk. If you cannot explain the purpose comfortably, prepare a short note stating that the funds are for your accommodation deposit and living expenses, accurately reflecting your own situation.

Keep a clear record from arrival to deposit payment

Keep the certificate securely and save a readable copy. Also keep currency-exchange receipts and the evidence of your eventual payment to the landlord. As a practical filing method, one folder can show the money arriving, being exchanged and being paid for the named rental agreement.

Before choosing cash, ask your bank about a traceable transfer and compare the actual fees and timing. If you pay the landlord in cash, request a receipt identifying the payer, recipient, date, amount and rental address. The customs certificate records arrival of funds; it does not replace proof that your landlord received the deposit.

What to check

  1. List all currencies and covered instruments before departure.
  2. Confirm the total and declaration procedure with customs.
  3. Collect the certificate before leaving the arrival area.
  4. Keep exchange records and a separate deposit payment receipt.

Common questions

Does the threshold mean larger deposits are forbidden?

No. It is a declaration threshold for physically carried funds, not a cap on your rental deposit. The origin, purpose and other applicable rules still need to be respected.

Does this explain how much cash I can take out of my home country?

No. Check the departure country’s rules separately. Korean entry guidance does not settle another country’s export requirements or later Korean departure procedures.
