Using Heating and Hot Water in a Korean Studio
Before changing settings, photograph the boiler’s model label and wall controller. Find the matching manufacturer’s instructions. This guide explains common labels; it does not replace the manual for your installed system.

1. Identify the controller
- The wall panel is the 실내온도조절기, or room controller. Note the brand and model so the landlord or manufacturer can identify it.
- Ask for a demonstration of heating, hot water and stopping heating. Confirm whether your room has individual controls or a building-managed system.
2. Understand the Korean labels
- 난방 means heating; 온수 means hot water. On Navien’s NR-67D, 실내 uses air temperature around the controller, while 온돌 uses the temperature of water flowing through the floor-heating pipes.
- The number shown in 온돌 mode is not necessarily your room temperature. On that example model, 전원 can stop both heating and hot-water operation. Other models may work differently.
3. Check away and winter settings
- 외출 means away mode, but its behaviour depends on the model. Do not assume that it works like switching the boiler off.
- Follow the installed model’s winter and freeze-protection instructions. There is no single temperature or button sequence that suits every studio; ask before a long winter absence.
4. Report problems clearly
- For no hot water or an error display, send the landlord a controller photo, the model name and the exact error code. Leave repairs and disassembly to qualified professionals.
- If you suspect a gas leak, avoid flames, plugs and electrical switches. Move to safety and contact the gas provider; use the appliance again only after professional checks.
